CAMEROON

Historical account from 1890 to 1970.

As a result of negotiations, in 1911, Cameroon, under German domination, annexes a part of the Congo which is ceded by France. In 1914, the Anglo-French coalition drives the Germans away. From 1919 to 1945, the country is declared a mandated territory of the Society of Nations, the greater part of its territory being under French authority and two zones bordering Nigeria being under British authority. The rapid agricultural development (cocoa, coffee, palm oil, rubber…) is slowed down by the 1939-1945 conflict. Leclerc recruits numerous soldiers in this country.

From 1944, local assemblies are elected but the country remains under United Nations supervision. In 1958, it becomes completely autonomous and in 1960 its Independence is proclaimed, a few months before that of the other colonies.
